Abstract
The press is the most important, effective, extensive, popular and convenient, cheapest and the surest method of molding and formulating public opinion. It is the most important of the elements which constitutes public opinion itself. Communal disharmony is a problem which attributes to various factors. Among those factors media also gives its contribution. “Pen is mightier than sword” – this old proverb seems to be true even today as the print media seems to gain strength in the modern society. The media is the most powerful single influence today helping to mould public opinion with regard to the need of fostering friendly and harmonious relations between various communities and religious groups and thereby promoting national solidarity. Right from the days of British rule the media has been a great supporter of communal peace and harmony. Media played an effective role in the early anti-partition movement launched by Indians as a response to the administrative decision to partition of Bengal in 1905. Mahatma Gandhi launched “Harijan” and “Young India” to support communal harmony and contained views of protecting the interests of minority communities. Maulana Azad’s famous newspaper” Al- Hilal” was a great supporter of communal unity and brotherhood and strongly opposed the communal extremist ideology which said it would greatly harm the future vision of free India. The various agencies of mass media condemned all the incidents and maintained communal harmony despite tensions between nations. India being the second largest in Muslim population in the world keeps a clear picture that India is a multi – religion country maintaining peace and harmony. Community and journalism help for solving the problems and help in maintaining Law and Order. In a country like India, it is the duty of the press and all media to preserve the integrity of the nation. Media is a powerful medicine and if the medicine is used properly, it can heal many ills and if misused it can become poison. The role of media in promoting communal harmony means information dissemination which combats propaganda for riots, intolerance or racism. Media promotes harmony, understanding, tolerance, friendship among individuals and groups and eradication of racial discrimination and racial prejudice. The active participation of society and media houses as well as journalists is key to success of proactive policing.
