Abstract
The troubling performance of the educational system
in Nigeria has become very worrisome so much so that it had now attracted the
concerns of major state actors both locally and internationally. The question
is, where have we gone wrong? Is it that the educational policies are faulty or
is it that the implementation process is faulty? These are issues that this work
seeks to resolve. Therefore, this work majors on a critical analysis of some
educational policies like, the U.P.E, U.B.E programme as well as the national
policy on education. However, the finding of this work indicates that
ineffective implementation of educational policies and lack of political will,
lack of continuity of governmental programmes and corruption are major problem
facing the implementation process in Nigeria. However this work recommends that
Nigeria should as a matter of necessity discontinue with the national policy on
education which is fashioned from the American system of education to adopts
the model of education practiced by Asian countries such as Japan, China, India
etc. that takes into cognizance, the culture of the people and is industrially,
scientifically, and technologically inclined.
